Hiraeth

Hiraeth is the tale of two kids, Zephyr and Moira, who leave their desolate home on a quest to find a magic orb with the power to restore life back to their home.

Hiraeth (Welsh pronunciation: [hɪraɨ̯θ, hiːrai̯θ]):  homesickness tinged with grief and sadness over the lost or departed. It is a mixture of longing, yearning, nostalgia, wistfulness or an earnest desire for the past. (No direct English translation.)

As a reflection of my background as an animation student, Hiraeth is made up of two animated gifs and 10 illustrations. The environmental themes touch on some of my own experiences seeing the destruction wildfires can cause and the pollution of wild spaces. I created Zephyr and Moira as nonbinary characters, mixing gender indicators in their features, builds, clothing, and hair. I personally want to see more trans characters within media, especially trans characters in content that is not focused on emphasising that they are transgender and setting them apart from cisgender characters. Hiraeth is a narrative with characters who are first and foremost themselves, and their trans identities operate in the same space cisgender identites do (ex. a boy main character can be in media without having to specifically write out “I am a boy” and his gender is just another defining characteristic like hair color).

Hiraeth: Creative Process

Across two semesters, Hiraeth went from a concept to a finished series of 10 illustrations and 2 animated gifs. Its creation involved world building, location reference sheets, several character designs with reference sheets, a map and general color palette guides for each place. From that, there were several rounds of thumbnails quickly sketched out to explore different possibilities for each story beat, toned rough sketches, clean colored flat sketches, storyboards and asset creation for the gifs, and then rounds of rendering to create the final, completed illustrations and gifs.
